Your gondolier casts off from Riva degli Schiavoni, beside St Mark's, and takes you onto the Grand Canal, gliding past the Gothic and Byzantine palace facades that can only be seen properly from the water. Then he turns into the narrow side canals, under low stone bridges and along quiet walls where Venice is still just a working city. Available by day or after dark, when the monuments are lit and the reflections turn gold. Up to five people share the boat, so it works equally well for a couple, a proposal or a family.
