Venice runs on timing more than tickets. St Mark’s Basilica is free but the queue is not, day-trippers now pay an entry fee on peak dates, and the difference between the city at 8am and the city at noon is the difference between two entirely different places.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Venice attractions across our booking partners.
April to June and September to October are the best months. Warm, walkable, and the light on the water is at its best.
July and August are hot, humid and extremely crowded. The canals can smell in the heat, which nobody mentions in the brochures.
Carnival in February brings costumes and enormous crowds. Spectacular, expensive, and accommodation books out months ahead.
November to January is quiet and atmospheric, with mist over the lagoon. This is also acqua alta season, when high tides flood parts of the city — raised walkways appear in St Mark’s Square and the city carries on. Check tide forecasts if visiting then.
Venice charges an entry fee for day visitors on designated peak days, typically spring and summer weekends and holidays.
It applies only to people arriving and leaving the same day without an overnight stay. Overnight guests are exempt but must register — hotels handle this and the city tax covers it.
The dates are published in advance. If you’re visiting for a day on a peak date, register online beforehand rather than sorting it at the checkpoint.
Entry to the basilica itself is inexpensive but the queue is the real cost — it regularly runs over an hour in season.
Skip-the-line timed entry is available for a small booking fee and is one of the better-value bookings in the city.
The Pala d’Oro altarpiece and the museum with the bronze horses and loggia are separate small tickets bought inside. The loggia terrace overlooking the square is worth it.
Dress code enforced: shoulders and knees covered. Large bags are not allowed and must be left at the nearby deposit, which adds time.
The Doge’s Palace ticket is combined with the Correr Museum and two others on the square — you cannot buy the palace alone.
The Secret Itineraries tour goes through the hidden administrative rooms, the prisons and Casanova’s cell. Small groups, limited daily places, sells out well ahead. It’s the better version of the palace visit.
Gondola prices are fixed by the city, not negotiated. There is a standard daytime rate and a higher evening rate, both for the boat rather than per person, for a set duration of around 30 minutes.
Up to five passengers share the same fare, which changes the value calculation considerably for couples versus groups.
Singing is not included and costs extra where offered.
The traghetto — a public gondola ferry crossing the Grand Canal — costs a couple of euros and takes two minutes. Not a tour, but it is a gondola.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| St Mark’s Basilica skip-line | Yes | Several days |
| Doge’s Palace | Yes | 1 week |
| Secret Itineraries tour | Essential | 3–4 weeks |
| Campanile bell tower | Optional | Same day fine |
| Gondola ride | Not needed | Walk up |
| Murano and Burano tour | Optional | A few days |
| Peggy Guggenheim Collection | Optional | A few days |
There are no cars. Movement is on foot or by water.
Vaporetti are the water buses and the main transport. Single tickets are expensive; multi-day passes make sense from day two onwards.
Walking is faster than the vaporetto for most central journeys. Venice is small — crossing the entire city on foot takes under an hour.
Getting lost is guaranteed and largely the point. Signs to San Marco and Rialto are painted on building corners throughout.
Luggage and bridges do not mix. There are hundreds of stepped bridges and no lifts.
Day one — San Marco. Basilica early with a booked slot, Doge’s Palace, Campanile, then wander east into Castello away from the crowds.
Day two — the islands. Vaporetto to Murano and Burano for the morning, back for a late afternoon in Dorsoduro and the Accademia.
Day three — the quiet city. Rialto market at 8am when it’s working rather than photographed, Cannaregio and the Jewish Ghetto, sunset from the Zattere.
Real trips, booked through our attraction partners.
