Stockholm is built across fourteen islands and has one museum that justifies the trip on its own — the Vasa, a warship that sank in 1628 and was raised almost intact. Beyond that, the city’s rhythm changes dramatically between summer and winter in a way that affects what a visit actually looks like.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Stockholm attractions across our booking partners.
June to August is the season. Nearly 19 hours of daylight at midsummer, the archipelago boats running, and outdoor life at full pace. This is also when Swedes take their own holidays.
May and September are cooler, quieter and good value, with most things still open.
October to April is cold and dark — daylight from around 9am to 3pm in December. The city is well set up for it, with museums, cafés and interiors built for long winters.
Winter brings the possibility of snow-covered islands and frozen water, which is beautiful. It also brings restricted archipelago services.
A 64-gun warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, sat in the harbour mud for 333 years, and was raised in 1961 with around 98% of the original timber intact.
It is the most visited museum in Scandinavia and the single best reason to come to Stockholm.
The ship sits in a purpose-built hall across six levels, allowing you to see it from the keel to the masts.
Busy from mid-morning through the afternoon in summer. Going at opening or in the last two hours is noticeably better.
Allow two hours.
Gamla Stan is the medieval old town on its own island — narrow lanes, coloured buildings, and the most touristed part of the city.
The Royal Palace is one of the largest still in use by a head of state. Tickets cover several separate parts: the Royal Apartments, the Treasury, the Tre Kronor Museum and the Armoury.
Changing of the guard happens daily in summer, less frequently in winter, in the outer courtyard around midday.
Stortorget, the main square, is where the Nobel Prize Museum sits and where the coloured houses everyone photographs are.
Djurgården is the island where most of the museums are — the Vasa, the ABBA Museum, Skansen and the Nordic Museum, all within walking distance.
Skansen is the world’s oldest open-air museum, with historic buildings relocated from across Sweden and a Nordic zoo with bears, wolves and moose. It’s large, mostly outdoors, and takes half a day.
The ABBA Museum is interactive and ticketed with timed entry, and it books out more than people expect.
Stockholm’s archipelago has roughly 30,000 islands, and getting out onto the water is what separates a good visit from a standard one.
Ferries run from the city centre to the nearer islands — Vaxholm and Fjäderholmarna being the most accessible.
Fjäderholmarna is 25 minutes away and works as a half-day. Vaxholm takes about an hour each way.
Services reduce substantially outside summer.

City Hall — where the Nobel banquet is held — can only be visited on a guided tour, and the tower climb is separate and seasonal.
The metro — the Tunnelbana — is efficient, and many stations are decorated as art installations carved into the bedrock. The blue line in particular is worth riding for its own sake.
An SL Access card covers metro, buses, trams and commuter ferries.
The city is walkable between adjacent islands. Gamla Stan to Djurgården is around 25 minutes on foot.
Sweden is effectively cashless. Many places do not accept cash at all.
Prices are high, though slightly below Copenhagen and Oslo.
Day one — old town and museums. Gamla Stan in the morning, Royal Palace, then across to Djurgården for the Vasa Museum in the afternoon.
Day two — islands and views. Skansen in the morning, then Södermalm for the views from Monteliusvägen, or a ferry out to Fjäderholmarna for the afternoon.
