Asakusa: Make Your Own Kumiko Coaster & Enjoy Matcha
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking art that creates intricate geometric patterns without the use of nails. For centuries, this refined craft has been admired for its precision, elegance, and beauty. In this workshop, you will learn about the history of Kumiko, as well as the craftsmanship and cultural significance behind it. You will then create your own traditional Kumiko coaster using intricate wooden pieces meticulously crafted by skilled Japanese artisans. Made from high-quality hinoki cypress and cedar, these coasters allow you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the wood, its texture and scent, and the delicate structure of the Kumiko design. To conclude, whisk your own bowl of fresh matcha and enjoy it with a traditional Japanese sweet (Wagashi), served on your new handcrafted Kumiko coaster. No prior woodworking experience is required. Your completed coaster can be taken home as a unique handmade souvenir and a lasting memory of your time in Japan.
