Shojin Ryori & Hands-On Tea Ceremony in a Historic Kyoto Machiya
Experience Zen-inspired cuisine and Japanese tea culture in Shizuhamo, a 100-year-old townhouse officially designated an Important Kyoto Machiya by Kyoto City. Enjoy a beautifully presented seasonal shojin ryori lunch or dinner, prepared without meat or fish and featuring traditional dishes such as handmade goma-dofu and simmered seasonal vegetables. After your meal, enjoy Japanese wagashi and prepare your own matcha using an authentic kettle, bamboo ladle, tea bowl, and whisk. Explore two traditional tea rooms, a peaceful Japanese garden, and distinctive elements of tea culture, including a nijiriguchi entrance, tsukubai basin, sunken hearth, hanging kettle, stone tea mill, and seasonal ikebana. This private experience is reserved exclusively for your group. Chairs are available, so no long periods of sitting in seiza are required. Shizuhamo is easily accessible from the Fushimi Inari area.
