Amsterdam De-colonial History Walking Tour Fighters and Activists
See a side of Amsterdam most city tours leave out. On this 2-hour small-group walk through Oost, a local guide introduces you to the people who resisted Dutch colonialism, slavery and racism, from the 17th century to today. The trade in spices, sugar and tobacco made Amsterdam rich, and it ran on enslaved and forced labor. This tour centers the people affected: an Indonesian sultana, the leader of a Kari'na nation, Maroon fighters in Suriname, and activists who stood up to Nazi occupation and racism. You pass De Gooyer windmill, Entrepotdok, the Muiderpoort city gate, Oosterpark with the National Slavery Monument, and the Dappermarkt, and finish at the Suriname Museum. Groups are capped at 12 and the tour runs in English, rain or shine. Topics include war and slavery, without graphic detail.
