Singapore is compact, efficient and hot all year, which shapes how you plan a visit here more than seasons do. The major attractions are clustered in a few areas, the transport works perfectly, and the main constraint is the heat rather than the queues.

When to visit Singapore

Singapore sits one degree north of the equator. Temperatures stay around 30–32°C every month of the year, with high humidity throughout. There is no cool season.

February to April is marginally drier and the most comfortable stretch.

November to January is the monsoon period — heavier rain, though typically in short intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle.

Rain is possible any day of the year. Every attraction has an indoor option and the malls are connected by underground walkways for exactly this reason.

Chinese New Year in January or February brings celebrations in Chinatown and some closures. The Formula 1 night race in September fills the city and doubles hotel rates.

Plan outdoor activity for early morning or evening. Midday is for indoor attractions.

Gardens by the Bay

The Supertrees are free to walk among. What you pay for is everything else.

The OCBC Skyway — the walkway between the Supertrees — is a small paid ticket and worth it for the view.

The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories are ticketed together and are genuinely impressive. The Cloud Forest has an indoor waterfall and a mountain walkway; the Flower Dome changes its displays seasonally. Both are air-conditioned, which matters here.

The Garden Rhapsody light and sound show runs free twice nightly at the Supertree Grove.

Marina Bay Sands

The SkyPark Observation Deck on the 57th floor is ticketed and open to everyone.

The famous infinity pool is for hotel guests only. There is no ticket, no day pass, and no exception — this is the single most common misunderstanding among visitors.

CÉ LA VI, the bar on the same rooftop, is open to non-guests and has its own pool for its patrons, which is the nearest alternative.

The Spectra light and water show runs free nightly on the promenade below.

Sentosa Island

An island resort connected by cable car, monorail, road and a boardwalk you can walk across.

Universal Studios Singapore is the biggest draw and needs a full day. Book ahead for weekends and school holidays.

S.E.A. Aquarium is one of the largest in the world.

The beaches are artificial and pleasant rather than remarkable.

Sentosa charges a small island admission on top of individual attraction tickets, depending on how you arrive.

Booking ahead vs walking up

The Night Safari is the world’s first nocturnal zoo and books out more than the day zoo. It’s a separate ticket and a separate visit.

Getting around

The MRT is fast, cheap, air-conditioned and covers everything you need. Contactless bank cards work directly at the gates.

Taxis and rideshares are affordable and metered honestly.

Underground and covered walkways connect large parts of the centre, which is how locals move around at midday. Learning these saves you from the heat.

Eating and drinking on public transport is prohibited and fined. So is durian, explicitly.

A first-timer’s three days

Day one — Marina Bay. Gardens by the Bay in the late afternoon, conservatories, Supertree light show, then the Marina Bay waterfront after dark.

Day two — the neighbourhoods. Chinatown in the morning, Little India, Kampong Glam and Arab Street in the afternoon, hawker centre dinner.

Day three — Sentosa or the zoo. Universal Studios and Sentosa for a full day, or Singapore Zoo in the morning and Night Safari in the evening.
