Porto is small, steep and cheap by Western European standards, and almost nothing here requires booking far ahead. The port lodges across the river are the defining experience, and the bookshop that inspired Harry Potter now charges admission — which surprises people who arrive expecting to browse.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Porto attractions across our booking partners.
May to September is the warmest and driest stretch. June brings São João, the city’s biggest festival, on the night of the 23rd.
April and October are mild and quieter, with good value on accommodation.
November to March is wet — Porto gets significantly more rain than Lisbon — but mild, rarely near freezing. The port lodges are indoors and this is a perfectly good time to visit them.
Porto is noticeably cooler than southern Portugal year-round. Pack a layer even in summer.
The lodges are across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, not in Porto proper. The walk over the Dom Luís I bridge takes ten minutes and is one of the best walks in the city.
Most lodges run tours with tastings included — typically a cellar visit followed by two or three glasses. Prices vary with the age and quality of what you taste.
The big names run frequent scheduled tours in multiple languages. The smaller houses offer longer, more personal visits and often better value.
Booking a day or two ahead is usually enough, though weekends fill.
Port types worth knowing: ruby is young and fruity, tawny is aged in wood and nuttier, white port is served chilled with tonic as an aperitif, and vintage is the serious one.
The neo-Gothic bookshop with the crimson staircase, and one of the most photographed interiors in Portugal.
Entry is ticketed, and the price is redeemable against a book purchase. Without buying, it’s simply an admission fee.
It gets extremely crowded. Early morning or late evening slots are considerably calmer.
The Harry Potter connection is disputed — J.K. Rowling lived in Porto and the shop trades heavily on the association, though she has never confirmed it inspired anything.
São Bento railway station has an entrance hall covered in around 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history. It’s a working station, free to enter, and takes ten minutes.
Igreja do Carmo and Capela das Almas have full tiled exteriors and are free to see from the street.
The tilework is genuinely one of the reasons to come here and costs nothing.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Port lodge tour | Optional | 1–2 days |
| Livraria Lello | Yes | Same week, choose a quiet slot |
| Clérigos Tower | Optional | Same day fine |
| Palácio da Bolsa | Yes | A few days, guided only |
| São Bento station | Free | No ticket |
| Douro Valley tour | Yes | 1 week |
| Six Bridges river cruise | Optional | Same day fine |
Palácio da Bolsa can only be visited on a guided tour, and the Arabian Hall inside is the reason to go.
The oldest demarcated wine region in the world, around 90 minutes east of the city.
Day tours typically include two quinta visits with tastings, lunch and a short river cruise. It’s a long day and worth it.
The train from São Bento to Pinhão follows the river for the last stretch and is one of the more scenic rail journeys in Europe. Cheap, and you can do it independently.
Harvest season in September and October is the best time to visit the valley.
Porto is steep. The riverside Ribeira district sits at the bottom, the cathedral and most of the centre at the top, and the climb between them is real.
The funicular dos Guindais connects the two and saves the worst of it.
The metro is clean and connects the airport to the centre in around 30 minutes.
Trams still run on three historic lines, including line 1 along the river to Foz — slow, touristic and pleasant.
Walking is how you see the city, but expect hills and cobblestones throughout.
Day one — the city. São Bento station, Clérigos Tower, Livraria Lello with a booked slot, then down to Ribeira for the afternoon and sunset from the upper bridge deck.
Day two — port and the river. Cross to Gaia in the morning for two lodge tours, lunch on the waterfront, then a six bridges cruise in the afternoon.
