New York is one of the few major destinations where a city pass genuinely changes the maths. Individual attraction tickets are expensive, the big observation decks compete directly with each other, and picking the wrong combination costs real money.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for New York attractions across our booking partners.
April to June and September to November are the best windows. Comfortable temperatures, long enough days, and the city at its most walkable.
July and August are hot and humid in a way that surprises first-time visitors. Midtown holds the heat and the subway platforms are worse than the street. Hotel rates do drop in late August.
December is expensive and crowded but genuinely atmospheric. Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue are packed from late November through New Year.
January and February are the cheapest months by a wide margin. Cold, sometimes brutally so, but museums and indoor attractions are at their quietest.
There are four major ones and they are not interchangeable.
Empire State Building — the classic. Best if you want the historic experience. The view does not include the Empire State Building itself, which some people find matters.
Top of the Rock — at Rockefeller Center. The view faces the Empire State Building and Central Park, which makes it the better choice for photographs.
One World Observatory — downtown, tallest, enclosed. Good for harbour and Statue of Liberty views, less good for classic Manhattan skyline shots.
Summit One Vanderbilt — the newest, next to Grand Central. More art installation than viewing platform, with mirrored rooms and glass floors. Divisive but memorable.
Most visitors pick one or two. Doing all four is expensive and repetitive.
The ferry ticket is what you book, and it covers both islands. Only one operator is official — book through the authorised ferry service, not from street sellers.
Pedestal access and crown access are separate, limited add-ons. The crown in particular requires booking months ahead, involves 162 narrow steps, and has a small daily quota.
The free Staten Island Ferry passes the statue and costs nothing, but does not stop. It’s a reasonable alternative if you only want the view.
Allow at least half a day for the full island visit. Security screening at the ferry terminal is airport-level.
Same-day discounted tickets are sold at TKTS booths, with the Times Square booth being the busiest. Discounts typically run 20–50% on shows with unsold seats.
Long-running hits rarely appear at TKTS. If there’s a specific show you want, book ahead directly.
Matinees are usually cheaper than evening performances and easier to get.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Statue of Liberty crown | Essential | 2–3 months |
| Statue of Liberty ferry | Yes | 1–2 weeks |
| Empire State Building | Yes | 1 week |
| Top of the Rock | Yes | 1 week |
| Summit One Vanderbilt | Yes | 1–2 weeks |
| 9/11 Memorial Museum | Yes | 1 week |
| Metropolitan Museum | Optional | Same day fine |
| Broadway (specific show) | Essential | Weeks to months |
The subway runs 24 hours and is the fastest way around Manhattan. Contactless payment works at the turnstiles — tap your card or phone directly.
Express and local trains share tracks and stations. Getting on an express when you wanted local is the most common visitor mistake; check the letter or number and the sign on the platform.
Manhattan’s grid makes walking easy above 14th Street. Twenty blocks north-south is roughly a mile.
Taxis and rideshares are slower than the subway during business hours in Midtown. Traffic is genuinely that bad.
Day one — Midtown. Top of the Rock or Empire State in the morning, Fifth Avenue, then Central Park in the afternoon. Times Square after dark.
Day two — Downtown. Statue of Liberty ferry first thing, then 9/11 Memorial and the Financial District. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset.
Day three — museums and uptown. Metropolitan Museum or MoMA in the morning, then the High Line and Chelsea Market in the afternoon.
