Dubai is built around a handful of very large, very well-organised attractions, and timing matters more here than in most cities — both the time of year and the time of day. Between May and September, outdoor sightseeing is genuinely difficult.

When to visit Dubai

November to March is the season. Daytime temperatures sit in the mid-twenties, evenings are pleasant, and everything outdoors works properly. This is also when prices peak and hotels fill.

April and October are shoulder months — hot but manageable, with noticeably better rates.

May to September is extreme. Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C and humidity makes it worse. Malls, indoor attractions and hotel pools carry the day, and most outdoor activity shifts to after dark. Hotel prices drop sharply, which is the trade-off.

Ramadan dates shift each year and affect opening hours, particularly for restaurants during daylight. Check before booking if your dates fall near it.

Burj Khalifa

Tickets are sold by level and by time slot, and the pricing difference is significant.

Levels 124 and 125 are the standard observation decks. Level 148 — At The Top SKY — is considerably higher, considerably more expensive, and includes lounge access and a shorter queue.

Sunset slots cost the most and sell out first, often weeks ahead in peak season. Booking a slot around 30 minutes before sunset gives you daylight, sunset and the lit city in one visit.

Non-prime slots — early morning or late evening — are much cheaper for the same view.

Entry is through Dubai Mall, and the walk from the mall entrance to the lift is longer than people expect. Allow 20 minutes.

Desert safari

This is the most-booked experience in Dubai and quality varies enormously.

Evening safaris typically include dune bashing, camel rides, a camp with dinner and entertainment. They run roughly 4pm to 9pm.

Morning safaris are shorter, cheaper and cooler, with dune bashing and sandboarding but no dinner.

Dune bashing is not for everyone — it’s genuinely rough driving. Most operators offer a gentler route on request.

Check whether hotel pickup is included; most include it within central areas but charge extra for outlying hotels.

Old Dubai and the creek

Modern Dubai gets the attention, but the older side of the city around Deira and Al Fahidi is the more interesting half for many visitors.

The abra — a traditional wooden boat across Dubai Creek — costs a nominal amount and is one of the best-value things in the city.

The gold and spice souks are on the Deira side. Haggling is expected and normal.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood has restored wind-tower architecture and small museums, and is walkable in an hour or two.

Booking ahead vs walking up

The Museum of the Future has limited daily capacity and sells out consistently. It is one of the few Dubai attractions where late booking genuinely fails.

Getting around

The Metro is clean, cheap and covers the main tourist corridor along Sheikh Zayed Road, including Dubai Mall and the Marina. Buy a Nol card at any station.

Taxis are metered, plentiful and reasonably priced by international standards. Rideshare apps also operate.

Dubai is not a walking city in the European sense. Distances are large, pavements are inconsistent, and for much of the year the heat rules it out entirely.

A first-timer’s three days

Day one — Downtown. Dubai Mall, the aquarium, Burj Khalifa with a late-afternoon slot, fountain show after dark.

Day two — desert. Morning free, afternoon and evening desert safari with dinner.

Day three — old and new. Al Fahidi and the souks in the morning, abra across the creek, then Dubai Marina and JBR beach in the evening.
