Copenhagen is expensive, cyclable and organised around water. Very little here requires advance booking, but Tivoli’s seasonal opening catches visitors out — the gardens close entirely between seasons, and arriving to find them shut is a common disappointment.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Copenhagen attractions across our booking partners.
June to August is the best stretch. Long northern daylight — light until nearly 11pm at midsummer — outdoor swimming in the harbour, and everything open.
April, May and September are cooler but pleasant, with fewer crowds and better prices.
October to March is cold, grey and dark by 4pm in December. This is when the Danish concept of hygge earns its reputation — candles, cafés and interiors.
Tivoli’s Christmas season from mid-November transforms the gardens and is genuinely worth the winter trip.
Tivoli closes between seasons — typically a few weeks in spring and again in autumn. Check the calendar before building a trip around it.
The second-oldest operating amusement park in the world, opened in 1843, in the middle of the city beside the main station.
Entry and rides are separate. The admission ticket gets you into the gardens; rides need either individual tickets or an unlimited ride wristband. Many visitors come purely for the gardens, gardens and atmosphere without riding anything.
The park is at its best after dark when the lights come on.
Seasonal closures matter — Tivoli operates in defined seasons rather than year-round.
Concerts and events are often included in admission.
Nyhavn — the coloured townhouses along the canal — is free, open and the most photographed spot in Denmark. It’s also expensive to eat at. Drinks along the quay cost noticeably more than two streets back.
Canal tours depart from Nyhavn and Gammel Strand and are the best way to see the city. Around an hour, covering the harbour, the opera house and the Little Mermaid.
Harbour baths at Islands Brygge and Havnebadet are free public swimming spots in clean harbour water. Danes use them constantly in summer and visitors rarely know they exist.
The statue is small — around 1.25 metres — sits on a rock at the water’s edge, and is regularly described as one of Europe’s more underwhelming landmarks.
It’s free, it takes five minutes, and it’s a 30-minute walk or short bus from the centre.
Most canal tours pass it, which is the efficient way to tick it off.
Nearby Kastellet, the star-shaped fortress, is free, quiet and considerably more interesting.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Tivoli Gardens | Optional | Check seasonal opening |
| Canal tour | Optional | Same day fine |
| Rosenborg Castle | Yes | A few days |
| Round Tower | Not needed | Walk up |
| National Museum | Optional | Same day fine |
| Christiansborg Palace | Optional | A few days |
| Louisiana Museum | Optional | Same day fine |
Rosenborg Castle holds the crown jewels and has limited capacity, which makes it the one that fills.
The Round Tower has a spiral ramp rather than stairs, built for horses, and gives a good view for a small fee.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is 35 minutes north by train and consistently rated among the best modern art museums in Europe — as much for the building and the sea-facing sculpture park as the collection.
Freetown Christiania is a self-governing community in the city. Free to walk through, with its own rules — photography is restricted in certain areas and clearly signposted.
Malmö, Sweden is 35 minutes across the bridge by train. Different country, different currency, easy day trip.
Copenhagen is a cycling city before it is anything else. Bike rental is everywhere, lanes are separated from traffic, and this is genuinely the best way to move around.
The metro runs 24 hours and is fully automated.
The centre is compact and walkable — Nyhavn to Tivoli is 20 minutes on foot.
Denmark is largely cashless. Cards work everywhere, including small kiosks.
Prices are high. Budget accordingly; a casual lunch costs what a decent dinner costs in southern Europe.
Day one — the centre. Nyhavn in the morning, canal tour, Rosenborg Castle and the King’s Garden in the afternoon, Tivoli after dark.
Day two — beyond. Bike along the harbour to Kastellet and the Little Mermaid, then either Louisiana Museum for the afternoon or Christiania and Vesterbro.
