Budapest is two cities joined by bridges — hilly Buda on one bank, flat Pest on the other — and the thermal baths are the thing that makes it different from anywhere else in Europe. Almost everything here can be booked on the day, which makes it a good short-notice destination.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Budapest attractions across our booking partners.
April to June and September to October are the best months. Warm, walkable, and the outdoor pools at Széchenyi are open without the summer crowds.
July and August are hot, often above 30°C, and the ruin bars and outdoor baths are at their busiest.
November to March is cold, sometimes snowy — and this is when the thermal baths are at their best. Sitting in a 38°C outdoor pool while it snows is one of the reasons people come here in winter.
December brings Christmas markets in Vörösmarty Square and around St Stephen’s Basilica.
Budapest sits on hot springs and the bath houses are the defining experience.
Széchenyi is the big one — a vast yellow palace in the City Park with outdoor pools open year-round, plus indoor thermal pools and saunas. Busiest and most touristed, and still worth it.
Gellért is the beautiful one — Art Nouveau tiling, more ornate, smaller, and calmer.
Rudas is the historic one — an original Ottoman bath with an octagonal pool under a domed roof. Some days are single-sex; check before going. The rooftop pool overlooking the Danube is the draw.
Bring or rent a towel, and bring flip-flops. Lockers and cabins are priced differently — a cabin gives you a private changing space.
Széchenyi runs evening “sparty” events on weekends, which are a completely different proposition from the daytime experience.
The castle district sits above the river on the Buda side.
The funicular from Chain Bridge is charming, short and has a queue. Walking up takes fifteen minutes and there’s a bus.
Fisherman’s Bastion gives the classic view over Parliament across the river. The lower terraces are free; the upper towers charge a small fee, though the view difference is marginal.
Matthias Church is ticketed and worth the entry for the interior.
The Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum occupy the castle building itself.
The most photographed building in the city, and interior visits are by guided tour only.
Tours run in several languages with limited daily places, and they sell out — this is one of the few Budapest attractions that genuinely needs booking ahead.
EU citizens pay a reduced rate with ID.
The best exterior views are from Fisherman’s Bastion across the river, and from the Pest embankment at night when it’s lit.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |

| Széchenyi Baths | Optional | Same day fine |
| Gellért Baths | Optional | Same day fine |
| Fisherman’s Bastion upper towers | Not needed | Walk up |
| St Stephen’s Basilica | Not needed | Walk up |
| Danube dinner cruise | Yes | Several days |
| House of Terror | Optional | A few days |
Budapest is one of the easier European capitals for spontaneous visits. Parliament is the main exception.
The metro is cheap and Line 1 — the yellow line — is the oldest underground on the continent after London and a small attraction in itself.
Trams 2 and 4/6 are useful and scenic. Tram 2 runs along the Pest embankment with views of the castle across the water.
Validate tickets before or on boarding. Inspectors are frequent, particularly at metro exits.
The city is larger than it looks. Crossing between Buda and Pest on foot is fine over the Chain Bridge, but the castle hill is a real climb.
Day one — Pest. St Stephen’s Basilica, Parliament with a booked tour, the Danube embankment, then a ruin bar in the Jewish Quarter.
Day two — Buda. Castle hill in the morning, Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, then across to Gellért Hill for sunset over the city.
Day three — baths and the park. Széchenyi Baths for the morning, City Park, Heroes’ Square, and a Danube cruise in the evening.
