Berlin is a city where the most significant sites are often free and unticketed — the Wall memorials, the Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate. What needs booking is a short and specific list, and the Reichstag dome is the one that catches people out.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Berlin attractions across our booking partners.
May to September is the best stretch. Long days, beer gardens open, and the parks and canals are full of people doing what Berliners do in summer.
April and October are cooler but pleasant, with fewer visitors and lower prices.
November to March is cold and grey, often below freezing. Museums are quiet and cheap. December brings Christmas markets across the city, and the atmosphere makes up for the weather.
Berlin’s museums are genuinely world-class, which makes winter a more reasonable proposition here than in most cities.
The glass dome over the German parliament is free to visit, and it requires registration in advance. This is the single most commonly missed booking in Berlin.
Registration opens a couple of months ahead and popular slots — particularly sunset — fill early. You must register with full names and ID details for every visitor, and ID is checked at the entrance.
Same-day slots are sometimes available at the service centre near the building, but never rely on this.
An audio guide activates automatically as you walk the spiral ramp. The visit takes around 45 minutes.
Five museums on one island in the Spree, collectively a UNESCO site.
Pergamon Museum is the famous one, though major sections have been closed for extended renovation — check current status before planning around it.
Neues Museum holds the bust of Nefertiti and is the strongest of the five for most visitors.
A combined Museum Island ticket covers all of them for a single day. The Museum Pass Berlin covers around 30 museums across three days and is better value if you’re doing more than the island.
Booking a timed slot is required for several of them even with a pass.
East Side Gallery is the longest surviving stretch, painted with murals, free and open at all hours.
Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse is the more informative site — a preserved section with the death strip intact, plus a documentation centre. Free.
Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous and the least rewarding — a reconstruction surrounded by souvenir shops. Worth five minutes, not more.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe near the Brandenburg Gate is free and open, with an underground information centre that is quietly devastating.
Topography of Terror, on the site of the Gestapo headquarters, is free and one of the most thorough historical exhibitions in the city.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Reichstag dome | Essential | 4–8 weeks, free but registered |
| Museum Island museums | Yes | Several days |
| Berlin TV Tower | Yes | 1 week for fast-track |
| East Side Gallery | Free | No ticket |
| Holocaust Memorial | Free | No ticket |
| Topography of Terror | Free | No ticket |
| Sachsenhausen tour | Optional | A few days |
Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial is around 45 minutes north of the city. Entry is free; guided tours from Berlin are paid and worth taking for the context.
The U-Bahn and S-Bahn together cover the city thoroughly and run late — all night on weekends.
Tickets must be validated before boarding at the small stamping machines on the platform. There are no barriers, which leads visitors to assume tickets aren’t checked. They are, and fines are issued on the spot.
Berlin is large and spread out. Distances between districts are real — Charlottenburg to Friedrichshain is a genuine journey, not a walk.
Cycling is excellent here. The city is flat and bike lanes are extensive.
Day one — Mitte and history. Brandenburg Gate, Holocaust Memorial, Reichstag dome with a booked slot, then Unter den Linden and Museum Island.
Day two — the Wall. Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse in the morning, Topography of Terror, then East Side Gallery in the afternoon and Friedrichshain in the evening.
Day three — museums or Sachsenhausen. Either a full morning on Museum Island and Kreuzberg in the afternoon, or a day trip to Sachsenhausen.
