Barcelona has one attraction that dictates the shape of every itinerary: the Sagrada Família. It sells timed tickets, the tower access sells out first, and turning up hoping for entry is the most common way visitors waste a morning here.

When to visit Barcelona

May, June and September are the best months. Warm enough for the beach, not hot enough to make walking the Gothic Quarter unpleasant, and the sea is swimmable.

July and August are hot, humid and extremely crowded. The city fills with cruise passengers and beach tourists at the same time. Attraction queues are at their worst.

October and November stay mild well into autumn. Fewer crowds, lower hotel rates, and the light is excellent for photography.

December to March is quiet and cool. Some beach businesses close, but the city itself functions normally and Gaudí sites are at their most accessible.

Sagrada Família

Entry always requires a timed ticket. There is no walk-up option in practice.

Basic entry gets you inside the basilica. Tower access — either the Nativity or the Passion façade — is a separate paid add-on with strict time slots and limited places. It involves a lift up and a narrow spiral staircase down, which rules it out for anyone uneasy with heights or confined spaces.

The Nativity tower is the older, more ornate façade. The Passion tower gives better views over the city.

Light inside changes dramatically through the day. Morning brings blue and green through the eastern windows; late afternoon turns the interior orange and red. Both are worth seeing, and they look like different buildings.

Book two to three weeks ahead in normal months, longer in summer.

Park Güell

Park Güell is partly free and partly ticketed, which confuses people constantly.

The Monumental Zone — the mosaic terrace, the dragon staircase, the famous benches — requires a paid timed ticket with limited capacity.

The surrounding parkland is free and open, with good views over the city, but it does not include the parts most visitors come to see.

The park sits uphill from the centre. The walk up is steep; buses and escalators exist and are worth using.

Casa Batlló and La Pedrera

Both are Gaudí houses on Passeig de Gràcia, roughly ten minutes apart, and both are ticketed.

Casa Batlló is the more theatrical of the two, with an audiovisual guide included. La Pedrera, also called Casa Milà, has the rooftop with the chimney sculptures.

Doing both in one day is possible but heavy. Most visitors prefer one, and Casa Batlló is the usual choice for a single visit.

Getting around

The metro covers the city well and is cheap. A T-casual multi-journey ticket works out far better than singles.

The Gothic Quarter and El Born are walking areas — narrow streets, no useful transport, and better explored on foot anyway.

Watch your belongings on Las Ramblas and on crowded metro lines. Barcelona has a well-documented pickpocket problem in tourist areas, and it is opportunistic rather than aggressive.

A first-timer’s three days

Day one — Gaudí. Sagrada Família with an early slot, then Passeig de Gràcia for Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Evening in Eixample.

Day two — old city and sea. Gothic Quarter in the morning, Picasso Museum, then El Born. Afternoon at Barceloneta beach.

Day three — Park Güell and Montjuïc. Park Güell in the morning, then Montjuïc for the castle, the gardens and views over the port.
