Athens is organised around one hill, and everything else arranges itself in relation to it. The Acropolis dictates the shape of every visit — and in summer, the time of day you climb it matters more than almost any other decision you’ll make here.
This page compares live ticket prices and availability for Athens attractions across our booking partners.
April, May, September and October are the best months. Warm, clear, and the archaeological sites are bearable to walk.
June to August is genuinely severe — regularly above 35°C with no shade on the Acropolis. The site now closes during the hottest afternoon hours on extreme heat days. Visit at opening or in the last two hours before closing.
November to March is mild by northern European standards, occasionally wet, and the sites are almost empty. Winter opening hours are shorter — check before planning a full day.
The ticket covers the Acropolis rock itself: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike.
A combined ticket covers the Acropolis plus six other ancient sites across the city — the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Kerameikos and Aristotle’s Lyceum — valid over several days. If you plan to see more than two of these, it pays for itself immediately.
Timed entry applies with capacity limits. Slots book out in summer.
The marble underfoot is worn smooth and genuinely slippery. Proper shoes matter here more than most places.
There is no shade on the rock. Water, hat, sunscreen — the site sells water but bring your own.
Free entry days exist on certain public holidays, which means very heavy crowds.
Separate ticket, at the base of the hill, and worth doing after the site rather than before.
The top floor is arranged in the exact dimensions and orientation of the Parthenon, with the surviving sculptures positioned as they were on the building. It’s the clearest way to understand what you just walked around.
The glass floors reveal excavated ruins under the museum.
Closed some Mondays in winter; open late on selected evenings.
The Ancient Agora is where Athenian daily life actually happened, and it’s quieter and greener than the Acropolis. The Temple of Hephaestus here is the best-preserved ancient temple in Greece — better preserved than the Parthenon.
Kerameikos, the ancient cemetery, is the least-visited of the major sites and one of the more atmospheric.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus takes ten minutes to see but the scale of the remaining columns is worth the walk.
All are covered by the combined ticket.
| Attraction | Book ahead? | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Acropolis | Yes | 1 week, more in summer |
| Acropolis Museum | Optional | A few days |
| Ancient Agora | Combined ticket | No separate booking |
| National Archaeological Museum | Optional | Same day fine |
| Cape Sounion tour | Optional | A few days |
| Delphi day trip | Yes | Several days |
| Island day cruise | Yes | Several days |
The National Archaeological Museum sits away from the tourist centre and is consistently underrated — it holds the Mask of Agamemnon and the Antikythera mechanism.
Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon is a half-day, best timed for sunset over the Aegean.
Delphi is two and a half hours each way and a full day, but it’s the most significant ancient site in Greece after the Acropolis.
Hydra, Poros and Aegina combine into a one-day island cruise from Piraeus. Rushed, but it gets you on the water.
The metro is clean, cheap and connects the airport, Piraeus port and the centre. Several stations display antiquities found during construction.
Plaka, Monastiraki and the Acropolis are all within walking distance of each other.
Taxis are inexpensive and plentiful. Agree the meter is running rather than a fixed price.
August sees many restaurants and shops close as Athenians leave for the islands.
Day one — the Acropolis. Site at opening, Acropolis Museum after lunch, then Plaka and Monastiraki in the evening.
Day two — ancient Athens. Ancient Agora, Temple of Hephaestus, Kerameikos, Temple of Olympian Zeus. Sunset from Lycabettus Hill.
Day three — beyond the centre. National Archaeological Museum in the morning, then Cape Sounion for the afternoon and sunset at the Temple of Poseidon.
